International Youth Opportunities North East (IYONE)

The North East has, for many years, promoted and supported international opportunities for young people in the region. A significant contributor to this work has been the Regional International Youth Committee, based at the Regional Youth Work Unit North East. For over ten years the committee has operated as the regional coordinator of the Connect Youth Programme in the North East, acting on behalf of the British Council. The committee has also overseen youth exchange opportunities to countries outside of Europe including China, Japan and America. In April 2007, the role of regional coordinator with the British Council came to an end. As a result of this change, the committee carried out a wide ranging review of the current and future role of the committee. The outcome of this redevelopment work is the establishment of International Youth Opportunity North East (IYONE).

IYONE is made up of the current members of the Regional International Youth Committee and a number of new colleagues from local and regional organisations. IYONE will continue and expand the work of the existing committee and will build on the many years of experience which has been developed in the field of international work with young people

IYONE is made up from members from both the statutory and voluntary youth sector and supports any youth groups in the North East who may be interested in international opportunities. In the coming months IYONE will be promoting and supporting new international opportunities for young people in the region. We will be providing information days, training for staff working with young people and support for groups with new applications for funding.

North East Commission’s 14-19 Youth Advisory Board (YAB)small-boro-comunity-centre-041008-084

The first year was a great success with the YAB producing some brilliant pieces of work. The North East Commission’s 14 – 19 Youth Advisory Board developed their own website/virtual portal, did projects such as case studies to promote young people’s opinions, were trained as young advisors and even planned and delivered their own conference!

One of the main objectives for 2009/2010  is to increase the size of the YAB for up and coming projects. For more information please contact neil@rywu.org.uk

Review of Youth Work with Black and Minority Ethnic Young People in Newcastle upon Tyne

2003

This six-month-long review into services to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people in Newcastle was  commissioned by the city’s Play and Youth Service. The tender was awarded to a joint bid from the Regional Youth Work Unit and Save the Children.

This review was commissioned partly in response to the 2001 OFSTED inspection of the City Council’s Children and Young People’s Section. The OFSTED inspection highlighted the need to provide speci! c services to BME young people and the need to integrate BME young people into mainstream youth provision.

In March 2002, the Play and Youth Service undertook a short consultation exercise with BME organisations in the city to find out their views on the scope of the review and how it should be carried out. The review’s brief for tender was largely based on this consultation exercise.

The aims of this review into work with BME young people are to:

  • Map and assess current services
  • Consider best practice
  • Make recommendations to inform strategy and policy provision
  • Involve BME groups and BME young people themselves in the review process.
