LLUK and the development of new qualifications in youth work

LLUK have asked for the below link to be circulated to networks. They are progressing the work on the development of new qualifications for those in the Youth Work Sector and you can use the link to express interest in getting involved or request to be kept informed of developments and progress.

LLUK recently sent an invitation to be part of a steering group for this work and the NYA will be part of this and will keep ETS informed as the work develops. To give an overview of the work and timeframe, in the email they conveyed “LLUK recognizes the huge importance of this work to the Youth Work sector and those areas that interface with youth work. The project has active support of our Executive Directors and Chief Executive. The project aims for delivery of LLUK “instructions” to awarding organizations by the end of the year which should enable awarding organizations to develop qualifications which could be available (and funded) by September 2010 – these qualifications will be on the QCF for England, Northern Ireland and Wales.  We are also supporting the development of Modern Apprenticeship and SVQs for Scotland – again with an end of year deadline.”

This is welcome news and good to see things moving and I am sure your thoughts and contributions to the process will be welcomed during the process of development.

Listen and Change

In 2007 Participation Works launched Listen and Change: A guide to children and young people’s participation rights. The guide is primarily aimed at senior leaders in the statutory and third sector organisations. It highlights the vital role they can play in driving forward change for and with children and young people. It explains children’s human right to participate in all matters affecting them and how to break down barriers which inhibit participation. It includes a summary of key participation legislation and overviews relevant inspection and monitoring frameworks.

Since its launch, we have distributed over 3500 copies and it continues to be regularly downloaded from the Participation Works gateway. Without blowing our own trumpet too hard, feedback from both practitioners and managers has been generally positive.

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England, which produced the guide on behalf of Participation Works, is currently planning to revise and republish Listen and Change.

A few things that can help the revision:
•         Were any chapters particularly helpful? If so, what could make them even better?
•         What is the ‘worst’ aspect of Listen and Change? Were any sections difficult to follow or need further expanding?
•         Did the document offer a good overview of participation? What is missing or could be added?
•         Have you spotted anything in particular which is out of date or needs updating?
•         Are there new key documents or emerging issues which we should include?

If you have feedback, please send it by Tuesday 1st September to Tom Burke @ tburke@crae.org.uk or call 0207 278 8222 ext 21

You Are Here: International Youth Day

On the 12th August 2009, the RYWU and International Youth Opportunities North East (IYONE) coordinated a very successful event to celebrate International Youth Day. The You Are Here event was organised to showcase international projects which have taken place here in the region, celebrate young people’s engagement in international youth work and provide training for practitioners in the North East. The event was attended by 120 young people and professionals from across our region and the day was a great success.

Young people were able to visit our ‘Market Place’, where funders and youth projects provided information about their work and funding opportunities. The highlight for many who attended were the presentations by young people about the international work which they have been involved with. We had presentations form the following groups:

  • Jack Drum
  • Beauty and the Bike
  • Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans
  • Intergen
  • Bishop Auckland Area Youth Project: One Chance
  • Gateshead 2 Ghana

The presentations ran throughout the day and 25 young people were involved in delivering the presentations. At the same time an international youth work training session was provided for practitioners who attended the event. The training involved information from the European Youth in Action programme, the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council and Platform 2. The day finished with a tour of Durham Cricket Club which was very well received by those who took part.

The evaluation which we have received from the event have been very positive and we hope to make the event part of our annual calendar of conferences and seminars.
