Launch of the UK Youth’s Campaign toolkit

UK Youth’s Hearing Unheard Voices project is funded through BIG lottery fund for 3 years; to give young people the skills and opportunities to speak up to shape services, through media and campaigning activities. HUV is aimed at young people aged 11-18, with a particular focus on those who are rarely heard such as homeless/ carers/refugees/ LGBT/ BME/ disabled/ parents and NEET’s.

This training day is aimed at workers working with young people on campaigning. The training day is heavily subsidised by UK Youth and each delegate will receives a free copy of the brand new Campaign Challenge Toolkit.

The day will be centred around UK Youth’s new Campaign Challenge toolkit, with a morning session on campaigning leading into media training in the afternoon. The toolkit will provide resources and activity ideas which can be taken away with you as well as an outline on how to incorporate accreditation into campaigning.

The toolkit focuses on equipping young people with the skills and resources to be able to start a campaign. The training will equip you as the service provider with a better understanding of what campaigning is; along with ideas on how to generate publicity and approaching the media. This will enable you to go away and plan your first campaign with your group of young people.
The Campaigning Challenge Toolkit will be launched through a number of national training days entitled ‘Developing and Promoting a Campaign with Young People’
At the end of this training, participants will have gained knowledge on:
•    Understanding of what campaigning is and what it can achieve
•    Developing a group culture for campaigning within your group
•    What is essential and important for campaigning
•    Planning a campaign: strategy, timing, expertise and budgets
•    A detailed look into how new social media can have an impact in campaigning
•    How to implement a media strategy into the campaigning
•    A clear understanding of how to use the Campaign Challenge Toolkit accreditations.
When, where and how much…
The details of the training days are below: Monday 7th June 2010- Durham
The times of the training is from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
The cost of the training day is £50 plus VAT per person.

What to expect…
Each delegate will receive a free copy of UK Youth’s new Campaigning Challenge Toolkit to take away with them.

Doing it the Brathay way!

In March myself (Martin) and Laura took young people from the Truth about Youth group, on a residential weekend to Brathay in Cumbria. We had spent the previous 2 months visiting groups in Tyne and Wear to recruit the young people, so the residential was a chance for them to get to know each other as well as me and Laura.

The group of 14 young people were aged from 11 to 22, despite the age range they bonded really well. The group participated in a number of activities and were all designed to improve their team work skills. They were  professionally delivered by the team of instructors at Brathay, activities included a high ropes course and whale boating. Laura and I also delivered an introduction session on Truth about Youth as a way of launching the work.

The weekend was a great success; young people really enjoyed the weekend, got on very well and formed a group bond. The weekend was very successful as Laura and I also established a relationship with the young people and was a great way to launch the group.

Launch of ‘Goodie in a Hoodie’ Campaign

On the 16th April 2010, young people from the Truth about Youth project launched their Goodie in a Hoodie campaign in their fight to change the negative image of young people.

The Goodie in a Hoodie campaign is one of the arms of Truth about Youth. It is a taskforce of young people (wearing hoodies) doing positive activities in the community, in order to take positive action against the stereotypes held about young people wearing hoodies. They will do this by volunteering, fundraising and getting involved with community projects.

The event was the first of many and raised money for Age Concern. The 70 businesses in Design Works, Felling all showed their support for the Truth about Youth Team by wearing their hoodies to work in exchange for £1. The young people also baked cakes to sell and had an arranged a raffle which was also proven to be very successful.

Paul Barney from Stoneham, based in Design Works said “Truth about Youth is an excellent idea and I hope that it will be able to dispel the bad myths about young people”.  Lynn and Trish also from Stoneham added “Truth about Youth helps promote young people in a positive light”

Total amount raised: £266

Overall the day was incredibly successful and lots of cash was raised. Everyone who works in Design Works were supportive to the young people and donated lots of money. Design Works as an organisation and its managing staff were also very supportive in allowing the young people to hold the event and were very accommodating. Both the young people and the young coordinators of the Truth about Youth would like to give everyone at Design Works a massive Thank You!

Battlefront – Channel 4 Project

Battlefront is an award winning multi-platform project for Channel 4.  It’s an amazing project which helps young campaigners (15-21).

Last year they followed 20 inspirational campaigners between the ages of 15-21. Their campaigns were hard-hitting and diverse – from fighting knife crime; to promoting random acts of kindness, to starting the very first National Youth Orchestra of Iraq.  They created a media storm, met with the PM and even got thousands of people to sign up to the organ donor list.

They are currently looking for this year’s 12 new campaigners (aged 15-21) to take part. They are looking for campaigners with hot new ideas, passion and bags of charisma and time to commit.

All our Battlefront Campaigners come up with their own innovative campaign ideas, update their blogs and video diaries, and use their social networking skills to highlight their campaign, which need to run for at least nine months. Each campaigner also gets the opportunity to work with our expert Battlefront Mentors.

Contact Battlefront on: 0207 0171658 / or on email.
Please check out Battlefront website on www.battlefront.co.uk, and their ‘Battlefront’ Facebook group.

Platform2 artist’s interpretations of poverty in developing countries

‘In the Face of Poverty’ contemporary art exhibition consists of a collection of artwork by up and coming artists and photographers from the North East who went to India with Platform2. Inspired by the people they met and communities they became part of, they have created artwork in a range of media: photography, charcoal and pastel drawings, graffiti art and videos. Platform2 artists explore perceptions of poverty through their work, and will do various workshops and awareness raising activities around development issues. They will also be telling their stories of their volunteering experience through talks and presentations. This exhibition will be held at the brand new venue, Shieldfield Methodist Church which has been renovated by the Biscuit Factory and transformed into ‘The Holy Biscuit’. The exhibition is free and is a great chance to share life changing experience of the artists and explore international poverty.

April 15th-21st, The Holy Biscuit, (Opposite The Biscuit Factory)
April 15th: Launch Evening 6-8pm
April 16th: 12-6pm
April 17th: 11-5pm
April 18th: 11-4pm
April 19th-21st: 12-6pm

“Isn’t it about time you made the news?!

Are you 16-19? Are you currently not in employment, education or training? Do you live in the Tynedale area?
If the answer to those questions is “yes” then you could take part in some cool training with Headliners and Tynedale fm. It will be based in Hexham but all expenses will be paid.

The training will look at the knowledge and skills required to make news reports for TV, radio, newspapers and the web. You’ll get the chance to use broadcast cameras, radio recorders and laptops to edit your work. Taking part in the Introduction to Journalism programme means you could get a qualification recognised by colleges and employers. And because Headliners work with many media organisations, your work could end up in your local newspaper, on the TV or on the radio.

For more information, or to get involved, please contact Kate on 07891 551 738 as soon as possible.

Truth about Youth Baseline Study

‘The Truth about Youth’ is one of many projects included at the Regional Youth Work Unit.

It aims to promote a more positive and realistic image of young people.  As an element of this project we are conducting a baseline study around the perceptions of young people in society, where they come from and who holds them.  We are particularly interested in finding out what  youth organisations like yourselves already do to promote young people.  We would therefore very much appreciate it if you would takea few minutes to complete the following questionnaire.
