North East Mental Health Youth Board

Young people in the North East have been asked to investigate the possibility of developing a Mental Health Youth Board similar to the one that has been developed in Birmingham www.youthspace.me

The youth board will be led by a young person, Sophie Woods and will comprise a number of young people from across the region who have experience in using mental health services. As an example, the Birmingham Youth Board meets monthly to advise decision makers on the following:

• How to develop new services from a young person’s point of view
• Web-site development
• Raising awareness about mental health issues and reducing stigma

There is a lot of great work going on around participation and mental health services in the North East and the Youth Board is a way of bringing all this together; bridging a gap between voluntary and statutory organisations and ensuring that young people really are at the heart of the services they use.
