TAY North East’er Challenge

DSC_0103 RS

An Eggcellent success! On Sunday April 15th TAY took groups of young people to Darlington town centre to take part in a day of activities ranging from treasure hunting to challenging negative perceptions of young people.  One of the challenges involved getting a photo taken with a police officer but for one team they nearly had egg on their face as they ended up in the cells at Darlington Police Station. Thankfully, this was part of a challenge and the team ended up getting a photo with four officers and in quite a unique place too!

The young people were encouraged to engage with members of the public to get their views of young people today as well as to raise awareness of Truth About Youth NE’s latest campaign – ‘AGE IS JUST A NUMBER’. The latest campaign is a bid to get rid of the age barrier between the generations and get people of all ages coming together to take part in a range of activities to prove that age is just a number and on the inside we are all the same. The innovative campaign will utilise aspects of social media as well as more physical forms of campaigning such as Flash Mobs, postcard campaigns and petitions.

ComMediaN Workshops

DSC_0473 web

On Friday 17th February 2012, 17 young people aged 16-25 gathered in Newcastle City Learning Centre to learn valuable media skills, provided by the ComMediaN (Community Media Network) Project.  The day, which began at 11am and ended at 4pm, included workshops focusing on creative photography, video interviewing, video editing and writing for media.  The project aims to help young people that have a passion for creative media to develop their skills and provide them with opportunities to use these skills, such as reporting at events and film-making.

ComMediaN is part of the Truth About Youth project, which is the Co-operative Foundation’s three year project in Tyne and Wear, being run in partnership with the Regional Youth Work Unit – North East to challenge and change the widespread negative perception of young people. ComMediaN helps young people develop media skills, such as photography, film making and media writing, to enable them to document and promote the fantastic work that young people are doing throughout the region.

Jamie Mercer, aged 24 and the ComMediaN Development worker said: “I think it has been a very successful event and everyone who has attended will have taken something away from it – and not just the certificate! I have got to thank the volunteers who have really put a lot of time and effort into making the workshops both educational and informative and I think the young people who attended enjoyed being able to create something out of nothing – whether that was a video interview, a trailer for a movie, photos or press releases. We are hopeful that by putting on such a strong array of workshops that we can encourage some of the young attendees to get involved with the project so we can really promote all of the good work that young people are doing in the North East.”

Rachel Byrne, 19 and a media student from Newcastle said:

“I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to let my media skills grow and I hope to continue to be a part of ComMediaN in the future and practice my new skills”.

Superb Swimathon

On the 14th February Truth About Youth held a swimathon fund raising event at the East End Pool in Newcastle in aid of Breast Cancer Care. The East End Pool provided a lane free of charge to show their support for the event.

Around 25 young people engaged in the fund raiser; some swam and others took to the streets with collection boxes and breast cancer pins to sell. The young people that swam took it in turns to swim in two hour time slots from 7am-6pm swimming breast stroke hence our slogan “Breast Stroke 4 Breast Cancer”. There was also a Just Giving page set up so that people could donate via text or online and our target was £500 of which we have raised £314 with more still to be collected in.

If you wish to donate please click here.

There was a great response from the public in terms of donations and the change of perceptions of young people; Carol Lovejoy Duty Manager said;

“It was great to see so many young people give up their free time to raise money for a good cause; it just shows that there are some very kind and caring young people out there who do a lot for society. We were very happy to help.”
