somewhereto_ be a success story

somewhereto_ recently partnered with North Tyneside Council’s Arts department and Custom’s House to stage an event called ‘So you wanna be….’. The event was hosted at North Tyneside’s YMCA venue and was aimed at young people that would like somewhereto_ learn and develop their skills within various cultural activities from dance and music production to art and graffiti work. Workshops were ran with around 20 young people and were delivered by professionals from across the region who had taken their talent and passion and transformed it into their career. The event was a great success and we hope to see further somewhereto_ projects blossoming from the event!

sara rant

Sara came to somewhereto_ desiring opportunities to give talks/speeches on issues which she is passionate about to different selections of audiences. somewhereto_ has managed to get her a slot in the young ranters event last Sunday at the Sage Gateshead which is part of BBC 3′s free thinking festival. Sara attended the event and presented her rant which was based on the newcastle based tv programme called ‘Geordie Shore’ which tends to show Geordies in a negative manner. The rant and event was extremely successful and humerous and can be viewed by clicking here.

We are delighted to announce that our Keyfund ‘pot’, under the license Keyfund Participate NE is now open for registration of new groups.

If you don’t know about Keyfund, then why not visit http://www.keyfund.org.uk/

Who can access Keyfund Participate NE?
Keyfund Participate NE is open to young people aged 11 to 25 who live in the North East and are engaged with or wish to be engaged with the Regional Youth Work Unit North East’s designated programmes, which are currently:

Truth About Youth – Challenging and changing the negative perceptions about young people. To engage with the TAY programme a press release must be issued about the Keyfund projects work, illustrating how it has challenged and changed negative perceptions.
North East Youth Network – Providing young people with a voice to influence decisions on issues which affect them.
somewhereto_ – Giving young people the opportunity to access spaces to do the thing they love doing.
NE-Generation – Changing the way young people and the cultural sector work together in the North East.

If groups don’t have a facilitator already, why not get trained as a Keyfund Facilitator yourself (or, alternatively, we may be able to assign one).

What happens next?

Talk to the young people you work with, and see if their Keyfund idea fits the Keyfund Participate NE programmes. If it does, then go to www.keyfund.org.uk and get your groups registered! As mentioned above there will also be future ‘Introduction to Keyfund’ training courses.

somewhereto_ host and rap!

SWT_logo_email_signature (1)

Sara and Louie came to somewhereto_ to gain opportunities to speak at huge events and increase their skills at public speaking and rap entertaining. The both of them compered a huge event at the Sage Gateshead called ‘The Power Tour’ where there were 150 people in attendance. The Power Tour took place throughout last week and featured young people’s bands performing at venues across the country. The pair had a great rapport with the audience and their performance was applauded from all angles and the crowd found their humour extremely entertaining.

Louie was also presented with the opportunity to perform his solo act of beat boxing and rapping which is part of his somewhereto_ project. Louie loved it and this was his second rap performance at huge public events through somewhereto_. This was after he was also given an opportunity to be part of the grand opening event. Louie wrote a rap to music by Gateshead’s Voltage Volunteers which acted as the keynote opening speech for the Juice festival. Louie and the musicians performed the track at the grand opening at the Sage Gateshead on Tuesday 18th October.

Maddie Otter is a member of the North East Youth Network and now found space with the somewhereto_ programme. She has had a brilliant article published in Live Magazine and we thought we would share it with you. Not only does the article highlight the positive activities of youth programmes and how useful they are to young people, but really shows how talented this young person is. Enjoy.

NEYN Meeting

NEYN Meeting - web_001

The North East Youth Network steering group had their third meeting last Wednesday 24th August at the RYWU offices.

The day started with a focused meeting with some of the members as they are undertaking The British Youth Council (BYC) Youth Voice Award. Later on in the day this meeting branched out to a bigger Network meeting.
The group then identified key issues which young people are facing and highlighted four which they would like to develop into regional projects. The Network’s young people split into four groups and pitched their project plans to members of the RYWU staff team in a Dragons Den style at the end of the session.

There was great discussion in all groups and really interesting points raised. Watch this space for more work from the Network coming soon.

The North East Youth Network have also developed a good working relationship with the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS). NCVYS have a national youth forum called ENVOY and the Network are pleased to announce that it has two of it’s members sitting on this national forum.
