Truth About Youth – North East is The Co-operative Foundation’s 3 year project in Tyne and Wear, being run in partnership with The Regional Youth Work Unit – North East to challenge and change the widespread negative perceptions of young people.
Truth About Youth – North East employs three young people to work on the project. Laura Iveson (full time) is the Young Coordinator responsible for youth work and managing the steering group activities. David Douglas (2 days per week) is a trainee youth worker, supporting Laura with the youth work activities. Jamie Mercer (2 days a week) is the Young Co-ordinator for Media, and will specifically be working on the development of the Community Media Network (ComMediaN).

Inspiring young people to change their world
The Truth about Youth programme inspires young people across Britain to undergo their own revolutions to change their world for the better.
Through a programme of grants, The Co-operative Foundation funds charitable projects that enable young people to challenge and change negative perceptions about their age group. The Foundation wants to help bring about a cultural shift in the way that young people are viewed and treated in this country.
The Co-operative Foundation is an independent charitable trust that was set up by The Co-operative to make grants to charitable organisations across the UK. In 2009, The Foundation launched its ‘Truth about Youth’ programme in seven UK cities (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Newcastle). The Foundation awarded one charity in each city a share of £2million funding to create and deliver a Truth about Youth programme over two years. The charities do this by bringing young people together to show their own communities the positive and inspiring things that they are achieving in their area.
What is it all about?
The key objective of Truth about Youth is to work with young people, the media and the wider community to challenge and change the negative perceptions of young people, which are widespread across the UK.
The Co-operative Foundation’s seven charity partners – Envision, The Prince’s Trust, Platform 51, Young Scot, Oval House, The Royal Exchange Theatre and Regional Youth Work Unit (NE) have all succeeded in creating and delivering youth-led projects
using a variety of different mediums including theatre and ‘the arts’, photography, online blogging and through engaging with minority and hard to reach groups.

Truth About Youth North East travelled down to London on Thursday (17th November) to collect their certificate for being highly commended in the Children and Young People Now Awards 2011, for the Volunteering and Youth Participation category. They were just pipped to the post by Youth Voice, from Your Homes Newcastle. This is the second high profile award that TAY have been recognised for in 2011, so we are delighted!

The PoSBO applications have now closed, we have had a lot of great entries this year and the judging panel will be getting their noses into all the paperwork over the next few weeks.
Shortlisting will begin properly the week of the 28th November and the lucky shortlisted will be informed by the 2nd December.

This week is your last chance to nominate young people for the prestigious POSBO Awards 2011
The deadline for this years POSBO awards is looming, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to get your young people recognised for their hard work this year! Do you know an outstanding, committed, passionate and hard working young person or group of young people? If so these awards are for you. Simply fill out the application form by Saturday 19th November 2011 to nominate.
If your young person / group of young people are short-listed, they will be invited to a prestigious award ceremony at the Centre for Life on Thursday 15th December. The evening will consist of great food and fantastic entertainment and of course the awards.

Truth About Youth held the first intergenerational residential of it’s kind at Brathay last weekend!
7 young people (aged 13 – 16) and 7 older people (aged 50 – 75) went away to Brathay Hall, on the banks of the beautiful Lake Windemere, for an intergenerational residential. The weekend consisted of a series of outdoor activity challenges and problem solving games, which aimed to get the generations interacting and working together. Activities included orienteering, rope games, rowing across the lake and art and craft activities. The young people and the older group were mixed up, and encouraged to dismiss misconceptions about each generation by sharing experiences and finding similarities and common ground.
The teenagers and older participants were brought together from Coast and Country Housing Association in Redcar and Cleveland, one of the largest of its kind in the North East. The older participants form the company’s Tenant’s Panel, and saw the Generation Game as an ideal opportunity to try and extend their reach to younger residents. The weekend was a massive success, and a short film and report will be available soon.

…of the NCVYS Young Partner’s Award!
Saturday 15th October saw 7 young people from the Truth About Youth project travel down to London for the prestigious NCVYS Young Partner’s Award.
Truth About Youth are delighted to announce that they won the North Category. A great night was had by all, including great food and entertainment. Well done to all of the young people involved in Truth About Youth to date.
