Truth About Youth


Truth About Youth – North East is The Co-operative Foundation’s 3 year project in Tyne and Wear, being run in partnership with The Regional Youth Work Unit – North East to challenge and change the widespread negative perceptions of young people.

Truth About Youth – North East employs three young people to work on the project. Laura Iveson (full time) is the Young Coordinator responsible for youth work and managing the steering group activities. David Douglas (2 days per week) is a trainee youth worker, supporting Laura with the youth work activities. Jamie Mercer (2 days a week) is the Young Co-ordinator for Media, and will specifically be working on the development of  the Community Media Network (ComMediaN).

Projects undertaken by Truth About Youth to date include:

Seven areas in the UK have received their share of £2million funding from The Co-operative Foundation, the grant-making arm of The Co-operative Group, to tackle the negative images of young people through its Truth About Youth programme.

In each of the seven areas, one charity has been selected to help establish projects designed to challenge and change the widespread negative perceptions of young people in their communities over the next three years.

The Co-operative Foundation’s seven Truth About Youth areas and charities are:

  • Bristol – The Prince’s Trust (Bristol)
  • Cardiff – Platform 51
  • Glasgow – Young Scot
  • London – The Oval House Theatre
  • Manchester – The Royal Exchange Theatre
  • Tyne and Wear – Regional Youth Work Unit (NE)
